It might be that your databases had somehow become corrupted or that a previously killed run had left behind a db.log file that was creating problems. These possibilities of course assume that either you or rpm removed the old database directory in the process of reinstalling. If you run into a similar problem in the future, you might want to try manually cleaning out the database directory before resorting to a complete reinstall. You can also try running the programs with one or more '-v' options, which should provide you with increasing levels of information regarding what the programs are doing.
