As root this shouldn't be a problem. But I thought about this. So I put 777
on the dirs/files... as expected no luck.

I simply ran
CXXFLAGS=-Wno-deprecated CPPFLAGS=-Wno-deprecated ./configure 
--prefix=/opt/htdig
as suggested, followed by make and make install.
gcc 3.3.2 is installed on this system.
