I think you could use a 'protocol handler'. I'm using one (but not for saving files). The handler is called by htdig and is handed the file to fetch. Htdig expects as output from the handler the data/text/to be indexed. You can use the handler to save the file before sending it on to htdig. I think.

Short of hacking the code, I don't think that such an option is available.
Even what htdig does keep is stripped down to plain text during the index
process. You might want to take a look at something like wget.
