I am making progress (I think), I hope you will stick with me.

I get a page cannot be found error when I place the file in
/var/www/cgi-bin

If I place the file in /home/sitename/public_html/cgi-bin it works
correctly

yes when file is in site cgi-bin.

Done!

I still got the Premature End Of Script Error. 

I checked the permissions once again and noticed that owner was root.

I changed owner to siteuser and voila!!! Search results.

Thanks for you help Mike.  I can now start to customize the pages to
match the site layout.  I will let you know how it goes.
