If you are using a version of ht://dig provided by a vendor they many not have enabled https; also, https crawling seems to be quite broken in the 3.2.x beta versions (at least that was my experience).

I was able to get it to work on Fedora Core 2 by building my own version of 3.1.6 using the libstdc++ workaround mentioned in the FAQ, and using the ssl patch available at the htdig.conf website:

http://htdig.org/contrib/

So, where did your version come from and which is it?
