Hello. You do not need to pay for Mac OS X Server to use Remote Desktop. You can buy a Remote Desktop 10 pack for $299.00 or better yet connect to your mac mini using VNC for free.

I think the main reason for not using OS X is that we use Linux for all our other servers and the sys admin wanted it to be consistent. That, and in order to use Remote Desktop for administering you (I think) need to pay for the $500 OS X Server, which in this case costs roughly as much as the machine to run it on. :)

If the problem is the slow disk drives then using OS X probably isn't going to help. But if it's something in Yellow Dog Linux, then it might. I just don't know how to tell where the bottleneck is.
