Obviously, it's simply a documentation problem. I see that the link you sent me calls it "largely unnecessary", and I'm really sorry for not reading it before; it's just that any other official document or manpage I've found obviously is not updated to the changed purpose of htmerge, even not in the newest tarball. :-( Once again, thank you for pointing me to the correct answer!
