Right, except if I run htdig as-is from version 3.1.x without a -v 
option or anything like this, I get no output. So the lack of output 
itself isn't a sign of a problem.

If you don't have any evidence that it actually performed indexing 
(like databases), you should go to the normal debugging routine of 
adding a few -v flags (-vvv should still spit up HTTP headers).
