For some cases this would be fine, but I assume a number of people
would like to set persistent cookies.

It's probably fine to use a format like the typical "cookie jar"
files. This would enable people to use other tools to set and clear
cookies. Of course the problem is that we'll have to add a few
options on cookie management too.
But the reason we haven't supported them before was simply that no
one had offered to do it. So if Gabriele is willing to implement
them, then let's get 3.2.0b3 out and take care of it.
