Yes and no. Future releases of ht://Dig will be more tolerant of
incorrectly formatted comments.

It's not *that* strange. Your old comments were incorrect, and going by the
HTML 4.0 DTD, your comments essentially say that they keep going (to the
end of the document). Your "workaround" changed them into correct HTML
4.0-compliant comments.
