Yes, in fact, if I'm not mistaken, you can use the local file system anyway,
and when htdig fails to find an index.html in a directory, it will fall back
to the HTTP server for the site being indexed.  As Torsten pointed out, the
HTTP server does generate fully parsable and indexable HTML for directory
listings, in absence of an index.html file.
