I don't believe this has been done. It would probably provide some speedup, but a large part of the latency is in actually performing the search itself. For example, try timing htsearch from the command line v. the CGI. Sometimes the CGI actually seems faster on my box! Obviously if you do make changes to work with FastCGI, other people would be interested in them. However, it's certainly not high on my list of projects.
