I finally figured out the problem. The local address (samiam.india.tek.com)
was not resolving to an IP address. I placed an entry into the /etc/hosts
file and it ran through fine. Thanks for the ideas!

This is usually a symptom of htdig failing to form a connection to that
address. Based on your description of 'an alternate web address,' I'd
start by taking a look at your Apache config.
