"-u" is not an option to the rundig script, but to the indexer
(htdig) only.  The rundig script is just a simple way of putting
some commands in sequence - nothing more.  It simply passes *all*
of the command line parameters to *every* program that is envoked
by it, so htmerge will barf on the "-u" option, since it has no
need for it.

You will probably need a slightly modified version of rundig for
your protected areas, i.e. where htdig is called with -u user:pass
and which is only readable/executable to the maintainer of the
site.
