There was a bug in the declaration of the Display::excerpt() method,
which may be causing problems for you. That fix, and many others, are
in the patch file:
http://www.htdig.org/files/contrib/other/htdig-3.1.2-bugfixes.patch
You can install it by going to your htdig-3.1.2 source directory,
and running:
patch -p1 < /path/to/htdig-3.1.2-bugfixes.patch
You may also want to install these two patches while you're at it,
but install the bugfixes patch first:
http://www.htdig.org/files/contrib/other/htdig-3.1.2-acroread4.patch
http://www.htdig.org/files/contrib/other/htdig-3.1.2-multikeyword.patch
After installing the patches, re-run make and make install, or build the
package as you did before. Geoff and I are considering the possibility
of a 3.1.3 maintenance release that will include all these bug fixes, but
no promise yet of if/when it'll be available.
