Free RAM in many OSes, including Linux, is used for file caching. If 
a substantial part of your database and/or the htsearch CGI itself 
ends up in the RAM cache, it won't hit the disk and searches will be 
much faster. Additionally, if you have more RAM, you're much less 
likely to swap (you don't mention if this is a problem).

I don't know that it's possible to estimate how much return you'll 
get for each MB or whatever. But you'll probably see a continued (if 
not linear) return for more RAM.
