I'll also point out that this was the whole point behind the ALT attribute
for <IMG> tags. AFAIR, these are set to "*" in the default templates.
As someone who browses with images off and/or a text browser, I know they
render ALT tags just fine. I believe most speech converters do fine with
them as well.
Of course as other people mentioned, $(PERCENT) is also a nice
alternative. That's what we use on our site.
