[htdig] Local files indexed using HTTP if index.html is missing

I don't have an "index.html" file in any directory and hence HTDig uses
HTTP while digging.

(This is reported by htdig -vvv)

How can I force it to _NOT_ use HTTP? Why, if at all is the
"index.html" file necessary?
