Does this (see previous solution below, sorry it's Notes mail) *really*
just search within the previously found result set for the new search words
(which could save time with very large databases) or does it simply
re-search the entire database for all of the search words.

It looks to me like it is the second option which is not quite the same
thing, even if it will eventually provide almost the same results.

The difference could be that doing the complete search again would rank the
priority of the new results with reference to all of the search terms
instead of just the additional terms which could be a useful feature.

Sure! The top of the search results page contains a field with the previous
search. It's labelled "Refine search" so you can add more terms.
