It's a grey area.  What exactly did your friend catch you doing?
Constructing a giant rat's-nest of <tmpl_if>, <tmpl_unless> and
<tmpl_else>?  If so then he's got a case.  However, when kept simple I
don't think it necessarily violates reasonable MVC standards.
