I also find the general ignorance of HTML::Template's existence surprising. HTML::Template's caching options in particular are more advanced than several other template solutions I'm aware of, yet somehow they seem to have more 'mindshare.'I think a few bug fixes and performance tweaks have been offered. Other than that, I agree with your assessment - it is near perfect.
What surprises me is how few people know about it. I have a copy of the
"Perl Black Book" and the second edition of the "Perl Cookbook". Neither
one mentions HTML::Template in the discussion of HTML templating solutions.
And yes, IMHO HTML::Template is nearly perfect!
