Looks like that's correct, 'cause I made the change, and
all is well. Sometimes it's hell being a newbie ...

I guess what I just learned is that you can assign the
values from a select immediately to an individual template ...
I was taking the approach that I needed to assign the values
to the script's "global" object in order to be able to
utilize the variables in a template.

... guess that's why they call it a learning curve

Surely that should be:

  $template->param(res => $res);

There's no reason to give CGI::param() an array of hash-refs, is there?
