If you are in a shared environment, just install Perl in your home directory, 
then set your PATH and PERL5LIB environmental variables to this new path.

For what its worth, Perl 5.8.x is so much better at handling multi-lingual text 
(than previous versions) that you will most likely bang your head against a 
brick wall, trying to get earlier versions of Perl to work as expected.

Also, 5.005_03 is a very old version...  probably the system default Perl which 
is used for boot scripts, etc... this usually means that there will be another 
version of Perl installed on the machine... this scenario is often done on 
FreeBSD machines.
