I think you're on the right track. But, I would go further by saying that maybe this filter should be built-in and available via a switch on the new method. The default behavior seems to be unintuitive because it leads everyone to ask "what's with the extra ... ?" it might be valuable to make the standard "use a filter" response more standard to the package. It would be part of the documentation. Easy to correlate by newbies.
