The problem is dealing with non-BMP characters that should be encoded as surrogate pairs in json. If you can hack together something that makes this work, go for it, otherwise I'll add simplejson as a dependency in the setup.py file (fwiw I think, for developers, chrdet, (c)ElementTree, lxml and BeautifulSoup should be dependencies since we need to test all of those things work with any changes). -- "Eternity's a terrible thought.
