It's been awhile, so I don't remember the exact details. Removing the patch, however, causes our templates to fail (file not found). We use lots of nested includes. Additions to the test suites for both 2.2 and 2.4 show that the unpatched versions handle simple nested includes OK (except when path is not defined) so I need to do more research to find out what the actual problem was.
