Mike is probably the ultimate authority on this issue. Here's my opinion for
what it is worth. 

(1) I do not like the idea of HttpConnection keeping a reference to
HostConfiguration, as HostConfiguration is a mutable object that may change
without HttpConnection knowing about it. This may *potentially* lead to all
sorts of nasty (and unexpected) problems. 

(2) The case (at least to me) does not appear generic enough to warrant
inclusion into the stock version of HttpClient. I do not have the specific
details of your applications, but based on details you have provided I tend to
think that a custom connection manager seems like a more appropriate way to
achieve the desired goal instead of patching HttpClient

(3) One does not necessarily need to subclass HostConfigutation class to
introduce new host level parameters. HostParams (see HttpClient preference
architecture for details

probably be sufficient
