Anders,
To me this looks like a reasonable behavior. If the connection gets shutdown
while it is still being initialized, throwing an IllegalStateException seems
appropriate to me. The only alternative to that is synchronizing on the
connection instance, which it personally would like to avoid for performance
reasons. If that's the price you are willing to pay you may want to extend the
DefaultNHttpClientConnection and make all its methods synchronized.
