Thanks for your questions, in meantime I did some further cleaning and re-booted the computer.
The problem seems to have vanished so I cannot reproduce the failure to start. I use macOS High Sierra version 10.13.6 and I downloaded the latest version of Hugin 3 days ago so version 2019.0.0. I cannot locate the zip file unless you can direct me the place where this might be Note that I am not software expert and 65 years old trying to help with a problem that may be gone now.
