It's not my invention, I am just paraphrasing more famous Open Source advocates than me. To answer Thomas' question: the key is pain, a powerful motivator. As long as it does not pain, it will be ignored. When it is in a development branch, it as good as invisible. Few people bother even looking at those branches. Integration in default increases the audience an estimated x100, but still most of that audience does not feel the pain of borderline use cases. I wonder what kind of users are those that use such convoluted filenames. I would have never caught any of those pesky unacceptable characters. Release increases the audience another estimated x100. Now things get some serious real-life testing and there is some feedback. The noise associated with the pain increases the visibility of the issue, attracts contributors, and eventually a solution is hammered out. Thank you all for helping make Hugin better.
