You mean vertical and horizontal lines? They could align to meridians and parallels of the sphere.

In such a case the optimizer: - will not prefer areas where projection distortions are large (a minimal angle error in such areas can lead currently to a large pixel distance, which has greater impact on the optimizer), - will provide consistent results, independent from selected projection type and image size.
