That was also my reaction. I now recognize the controls as a shaded variation of GIMP's crop interface. The control would be intuitive for me if the rectangles are instead triangles pointing into the image portion to remain much like a carpenter's mark that indicates which side of a cut line the wood should remain undisturbed by a saw blade.
