One issue you may be working with is distortion of the files from the
online mapping site.
I've tried to tile satellite photos from those sites too, with either
of tow problems, for example:

1. Google Maps yields undistorted tiles (they are "Orthographic"), but
they have the annoying watermarks all over them.
2. Google Earth has no watermarks, but aren't Orthographic; the files
are fisheye distorted as if you were really taking a photo of the
Earth form an elevation of a few hundred miles.
So, tiles for each have their drawbacks, but Google Earth files are
nearly unusable, tho a good Huginner might be able to deal with them.
that ain't me.

Like a poster below, I do tile patching in Photoshop.
