I tried the below and it just core dumps immediately. I got the same
results with 8 bit tifs with the "-m avg" option:

hugin_hdrmerge -o hdrmergeOutout_ -v -v -m avg 20090523037.jpg
20090523038.jpg 20090523039.jpg 20090523040.jpg 20090523041.jpg
20090523042.jpg 20090523043.jpg 20090523044.jpg 20090523045.jpg

caught exception: Cannot read image file "20090523037.jpg". File is
not an image file.
[1]    15299 abort (core dumped)  hugin_hdrmerge -o hdrmergeOutout_ -v
-v -m avg 20090523037.jpg 20090523038.jp
