Thanks for your help. I downloaded the 0.8 version and tried it. I did
have the image format set on the stitching tab; good to know that what
I saw in the file save dialog was normal.
This time the window with status text stayed up a little longer, but
still only a couple of seconds, and maybe ten lines. In the directory
where I told it to save the image, there was a new file called 'NUL'.
Inside was the following text:

rm: illegal option -- -
usage: rm [-f | -i] [-dPRrvW] file ...
unlink file
--------------------
Still no image file, unfortunately.
No hugin files in my crash log directory either. The program didn't
crash, it stayed open - it just failed to create an image file.
