Carl/Harry (note backslash): I suspect you speaketh wisely, and I may even refile my whole computer someday, tho I think I will wait until the next big system crash and upgrade (every 2 years on average), but my current version, OS 10.4.11 is the most stable one I've ever had, so I'm not in a big hurry.
But for the time being, whichever of the suggestions you made did finally work (probably that errant backslash) and I am pleased to report that I have successfully stitched 2 panoramas! Break out the champagne! Thanks for the help! The stitching is vastly superior to what I was using before and the control point "control" is just what I needed. I don't understand 10% of Hugin's options and data entries (camera response? HDR output? etc), so I just used all the defaults and crossed my fingers.
