that's the pixel dimension, which is often mistaken for the resolution.

resolution is the "ability to resolve", i.e. to show details.

used to measure resolution.

cameras are complex systems of optics and electronics. each stage of the 
process has its own resolution. The combined system results in a more or 
less detailed image. marketers reduced "resolution" to megapixels to 
fool uninformed consumers.
