that's the pixel dimension, which is often mistaken for the resolution. resolution is the "ability to resolve", i.e. to show details. <http://www.dpreview.com/news/0510/05101404newreschart.asp> is what is used to measure resolution. cameras are complex systems of optics and electronics. each stage of the process has its own resolution. The combined system results in a more or less detailed image. marketers reduced "resolution" to megapixels to fool uninformed consumers.
