I am trying to create "islands" using a stereographic image, the

Precondition violation!
Unable to open file 'C:\Documents and Settings\me\Desktop\Botanic

This error seems to appear with Windows, I don't have a solution.
Though the best advice for stitching stereographic 'little planet'
type images is to always stitch to a standard spherical
equirectangular panorama first, then reload this into a new
single-photo Hugin project - Where it is easy to generate as many
different views, stereographic or otherwise, as you need.
