I would like to make a suggestion similar to that of rlhelinski's. I
think it would be very useful if there was a button analogous to the
current "autocrop" button for HDR images. This would set the crop
region equal to the largest possible area that is covered by every
single exposure-level in the set, so that the final HDR did not end up
with areas that do not have the full exposure information.

This is a good idea and could probably be implemented by reusing existing code, but I can't say when it would be implemented. The best thing to do is to create a feature-request in the sourceforge tracker so it doesn't get lost: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=77506&atid=550444
