This sounds like a good plan.
Note that the panorama math isn't really that difficult, and that
you don't have to do much calculation to distort a GL preview mesh.
i.e. you can do the entire preview client-side with javascript and
it would be very responsive. Things like optimisation/alignment and
high quality rendering would need to be done on the server, but this
would be a sensible division of labour if it was done using the
existing command-line tools in a sandbox controlled by some
task-manager daemon.
