how about the following idea (a slightly denaturated use of Hugin)?

1. make the background image of high enough resolution, with width 2x height
2. load it in hugin. set the image type to equirectangular with FoV 360
3. open the fast preview window and check that it shows an equirectangular,
the full 360x180
3. load the individual rendered images into hugin as well
4. in the fast preview, drag the individual images around to place them on the
background (that's what the above linked editor does, sort of?)
5. if the image is to big/too small, go to the camera and lens tab and adjust
its fov
6. when everything is in place, go to the stitching tab and stitch.
attention: if there is too much overlap enblend will choke. in that case,
render the individual remapped images, load them in an image editor and mask
their holes away in the background image before feedling the masked images
again to enblend
