I would like to propose an enhancement to the straight line control
points to indicate the line is the horizon/equator. Photos which
contain an identifiable horizon/equator could be automatically
adjusted for pitch& roll.

Thinking about it, it might be possible to perform the same adjustment
by creating vertical control points tangent to the horizon line,
although it would be difficult to avoid numerical error.

Use horizontal line control points. For cylindrical and equirectangular output only the horizon is horizontal and straight, hence this should work as you want.

Only in rectilinear output all hrizontal structures like edges of buildings etc. are horizontal. If your output is rectilinear you need to switch to cylindrical temporarily and optimize to achieve what you want. See

for details.
