OSX uses forks which do not occur on linux like systems. I dived into it some time ago, but thought it was fixed in the mean time. It means that I will have to dive into it again.
To the developers: It only happens on OSX when trying to overwrite an existing image, sometimes including the intermediate tiffs created in the process.
