It seems that I am doing something wrong using Hugin, but the
'optimize now' button never seems to work for me. The popup appears
saying 'optimizing variables', but it never finishes. The Elapsed Time
always shows 0:00:00, and hitting the cancel button does nothing.
Running hugin 2010.0.0+dfsg-3+b1 on debian unstable.

Be careful with horizontal control points (you have several of those
defined):<http://wiki.panotools.org/Horizontal_control_points>
To make sure I removed all the horizontal lines in the control points.
Still the same result.
One vertical line isn't correct (#2) and also I'm not sure that
correcting in two planes works (or makes sense at all). Horizontal Lines
as they are defined in hugin should IMHO be parallel to the image plane.
Defining only vertical lines helps to correct for perspective
correction, i.e. if your architectural image was shot of a large
building from the street.
You don't want to achieve a different viewpoint, do you?
Basically I would delete all the hor. lines or at least make them
straight lines. If optimizing for p and r still doesn't lead to a result
then I suspect something is very wrong with your installation. It works
here on Mac (2010.5.0).
See <http://wiki.panotools.org/Hugin_FAQ#Installation>
Could that be a libpano problem?
Here is my quickly corrected .pto (no correction for image distortion)

ps.
There was a really helpful tutorial by Helmut Dersch still on several
mirrors but I just right now have trouble accessing one of the main
mirrors listed on <http://wiki.panotools.org/Mirrors>: Big Ben's link
seems now to be a referrer to all-in-one.ee/~dersch/ which is not
accessible. Also Daniel Maurer seems to have given up his webspace.
