Thanks. I basically did as described, clicking in the (old) preview to get a rough zero-placement and then finetuning by pasting the image's negated y/p/r values to the Numeric Transform boxes in the Preview. This had to be done a few times to stabilize it since everything is affected when the complete panorama is being moved around.
Perhaps a function "Center this image" could be added? I need this sometimes to pre-stitch images where there's an ugly seam, to get an intermediate image which can be used to retouch one of the originals. So, pixel-perfect precision is necessary. In this case I had a spherical pano which had some parallax error near the zenith where the ceiling has a hole to the upper floor. I had found an alternative optimization that solved this seam but destroyed the rest of the scene. So I stitched this alternative into a temporary rectilinear image centered on one of the original images as described above (one of the shots tilted 45 degrees up), then cloned the difficult parts from this into the original image (which I vertically expanded to include zenith) and gave it an alpha channel that shows the retouched stuff. Re-introduced it in the pano and masked out the same parts from the other images. Perfect! Actually, ideally, lens parameters would also have had to be reset in the temporary stitch but that would be impossible since it was a spherical pano so instead I did a second temporary stitch between this temporary image and the original shot and "reversed" the lens distortions there to match the original. Then cloned from this into the original. Here's the pano - a 100 years old derelict paper factory in Sweden. My most death-defying panorama yet!
