But pv does not process hugin's mask information (yet), so if you want parts masked out for processing with pv, you have to 'manually' make the unwanted bits transparent. You can do that e.g. with gimp: add an alpha channel to your image if it doesn't have one yet, then pick the 'eraser' tool and select a *soft* brush to 'erase' the unwanted bits with a bit of 'feathering'.

@Harry and whoever else may be interested: I'd like to give a slightly modified procedure, because - when stitching - I noticed that doing it the 'obvious' way with the gimp will produce artifacts: slightly darkened halos around the erased areas. These halos occur because by default the gimp also messes with the RGB values and darkens them where the eraser takes effect. In my opinion this is wrong, but that's what happens. I found a workaround:

- once you have added the alpha channel, open the 'layers/channels' window

- select the 'channels' tab

- click on the fourth one, the alpha channel

- now use the eraser: this will really only affect the alpha channel.
You want a slightly soft brush, like .95, to have slight feathering.

- once the unwanted bits are gone, export the image to a format that can handle transparency, like TIFF, PNG or exr.

- make sure when exporting to check 'save colour values from transparent pixels'

Doing it this way, the RGB values are not touched, even if the alpha channel is removed totally in some places. With images edited like this, the stitch should come out with good blending, if the images fit well.
