Derek,
You are right that there are problems with the 16 bit version of 971118
-- we have encountered similar examples in our own testing, and do not
have any easy fixes. The problems seem to be quite serious, and we are
anxious to avoid further delays to the final release of version 1.4.
As a result, we do not expect to produce a 16 bit release for the final
version of Hugs 1.4.
In an ideal world, we would liked to have continued to offer support
for the older PC operating systems, but we just don't have the
resources for that. For the time being, the recommendation for anyone
using DOS and Win 3.1 is to stick to Hugs 1.3.
Another option, but not one that we have had the opportunity to test
for ourselves, would be for Win 3.x users to install the Win32s upgrade,
which might then allow the use of the 32 bit versions of Hugs in the
older environment. I know that this worked fairly well for Hugs 1.3,
for example.
All the best,
Mark
