not sure what might be the cause, but if Prelude.hs is somehow missing
from your installation, something's badly amiss. Perhaps you could try
downloading the current release (Nov2002) from
 
 
and give it a go instead?

I downloaded hugs98-2001 but can't get it to run. It comes up with
a "hugs" screen, but tells me that it can't find a file called "Prelude"
and then quits. I searched the whole disk, but there is no "Prelude"
anywhere to be found.
