An update. The sound card in my laptop was not accurate. My hum is EXACTLY 100Hz It is also in synchronous to the mains 50Hz
So in MY case, MY hum is most probably an electric motor.... somewhere. Annoyingly, it has not been present since I returned from a weeks holiday, having been present 24/7 for many weeks prior.
