I have been experiencing the hum in SE Ohio for almost 2 years now. The intensity changes from bearable to unbearable. I was fortunate to have phone conversations with Dave Stetzer, and Mike Martin, two men who work in areas that have been related to the hum. Mr. Martin teaches workshops to Utility workers to help them identify and resolve customer noise complaints, so I contacted him to ask if it was viable for me to take his workshop (with minimal engineering experience) to determine a means of recording/identifying the hum. I may have stated all this in previous posts but the following is a synopsis of what seems to have helped me 'bear' this noise pollution. I purchased an HF 35C from 'Gigahertz Solutions' which analyzes HF signals from 800 MHz - 2500 MHz, after watching a video on YouTube of a user showing the spikes coming from a new 'smart meter'. I explained to Mr. Martin that the Hum seemed to be worse at my home, and I did not experience it when I was out in town or on job sites, so I thought it was geographical, or related to my home environment where a 3phase power line extends along the back of my property about 40 feet from the back of my house, and a cell phone tower looms another 3,000 feet behind that. Mr. Martin likens this exposure to elevated freq. levels to standing in the sun for 8 hours then taking a lukewarm shower. The water will feel hotter since our skin has been over-exposed and sensitized. In the same way, constant exposure to low level frequencies over sensitizes our bodies bio-electrically and we experience the hum. An explanation of why I hear it at home was that we get accustomed to our audible environment. We unconsciously 'know' the sounds of our home. We can tell when we hear a car if it is in our driveway or a neighbors. We know our dog's different barks, etc, and so, are more tuned in the sounds in our own environment. I do hear the hum when I sleep other places, but only when the ambient sounds there are very low, and then it always more distant. I suspect if I stayed in an alternative space long enough I would hear it more vividly, but I pray I can find a place where that is not the case.
Mr. Stetzer spoke about Stray or Orphan voltage, specifically related to SMPS (Switching mode Power supply). The difference (related to Lidia's reference to AC/DC converters) is that CFLs, and all DC chargers (cell phones, computers, etc) are not linear power. A standard incandescent light bulb is an example of linear power. The power comes into the lamp, crosses the filament and goes back out. The frequency analysis on a chart would be smooth loops up and down at 60 hz. With an SMPS the loops are jagged since ballasts and other devices are interrupting the smooth flow of the freq. According to Mr. Stetzer stray voltage escapes the wiring in our homes, thus exposing us to elevated levels of EMF radiation. The book "Dirty Electricity" addresses this issue as well in relation to cancer clusters at a school in California. I made some changes in my home while investigating the freq. output of my home wireless internet router which was suggested as a cause of elevated exposure. Using the HF 35C, I first turned off, then disconnected, and then unplugged my router, but was still reading a maximum spike on my analyzer, then suddenly realized my 'cordless phone' base was on the shelf right below the router. I unplugged the phone and the readings dropped from over 2,000 microwatts/cm sq to 3. I read more about these bases putting off frequencies 24/7, and how many people sleep with the phone right beside the bed. I switched to the old style phone, plugged into the wall; I hard wired my router and purchased a modem that has a switch to turn the wireless function 'off'. I replaced all the CFLs which has become the predominant light source (since they purportedly 'save' us so much on our electric bills), with incandescent and LEDs, and eliminated some wiring in the wall to the receptacle directly above my bed. I still hear the hum, but it is more a distant nuisance than a constant tasing. I do not know if this slight relief is psychological, since I have no knowledge on how to analyze frequencies to see just how different they may be in an environment with and without the above mentioned devices. I am moving to a new property over the next year where I intend to build a structure without rebar, or any electrical wiring, as it was also suggested the wiring in our walls, being a conductor, acts as an antenna for RFs and EMFs(this was also illustrated by a guy who did an experiment with HomePlug and how he was able to pick up a wireless signal on his computer through a string of Christmas lights). Analog television in our area also changed to Digital about the same time I started hearing the hum thus increasing the EMF saturation that is enveloping our planet. I apologize if all this seems 'trite', or if I have mis-represented anyone's opinion.
